The Hellenic Coast Guard prioritises safety of navigation for the entire maritime community. Major functions in the field of safety of navigation include:
- Provision of maritime traffic control (VTS) and other safety of navigation services in accordance with international requirements (e.g.: Safe Sea Net, Automatic Identification System, Long Range Identification and Tracking of ships etc)
- Operation and maintenance of the national maritime telecommunications network.
- Issuing maritime safety instructions in cooperation with other domestic competent authorities
- Investigation of maritime accidents in accordance with national and international law
